Improving your dead hang is mostly patience and a little technique. Fix how you hold the bar, train your grip three or four times a week without grinding to failure, and add a few seconds each week. Here's the whole method — and a four-week plan to follow.

First, the free seconds
Before you train anything, better technique alone can add time. Most people leave seconds on the bar because of how they grip and how they hang.
- Grip width. Hands about shoulder-width apart — enough leverage without straining the shoulders.
- Thumb position. Wrap your thumb fully under and around the bar, not resting on top. A closed grip is far harder to slip out of.
- Chalk. The simplest upgrade there is. Dry hands slip later, and slipping — not fatigue — is what ends a lot of hangs.
- Body control. Legs straight, feet together, core lightly braced. Swinging wastes grip; a still body lasts longer.
- Shoulders. Keep them actively engaged to protect the joints, or let them relax into a passive hang — pick one on purpose rather than sagging halfway.
Don't train to failure
The counterintuitive part: hanging until you drop off, every single time, is a slow way to improve. Maxing out builds fatigue faster than it builds capacity, and it makes each session something you dread.1
Instead, do sub-maximal holds — about 70–80% of your best time — and stop with a little left in the tank. More frequent, slightly easier sets beat rare, brutal ones for building endurance. Save the all-out max test for once a week or two, to see where you actually are.
Grease the groove
The most reliable way to add hang time is to accumulate volume, not intensity. "Greasing the groove" means sprinkling easy, well-short-of-failure sets through your week: two to three sub-maximal hangs tacked onto the end of a workout, three to four days a week, always fresh, never fried.2 Your grip and forearms respond to how often they're loaded, so frequent light exposure compounds quietly.
A four-week plan
Start by timing one honest max hang. Call that number your baseline — every hold below is a share of it. Rest fully (2–3 minutes) between sets so each one is quality, not survival.

If the bar's too hard — or too easy
Match the load to where you are today.4
- Can't hold your bodyweight yet? Loop a resistance band under your feet, or rest your toes lightly on a bench or box to offload some weight. Hold longer with good form, then remove support as you get stronger.
- Bar feels easy? Make your grip work harder: throw a towel over the bar and hang from that, add thick-grip attachments, or wear a weight vest. Harder grip, same short holds.
Where hangtime fits
Hanging by percentages only works if you know your real numbers — and watching a stopwatch while you hang is exactly what you can't do. hangtime starts the clock when you leave the ground and stops it when you drop off, hands-free, so every hold gets logged without a spotter or a tap. Set a baseline, chase 70–80% of it, and watch the number climb week over week. That feedback loop is most of the battle.
The honest caveat
None of this is medical advice — it's a summary of common coaching practice, not a plan built for you. Progress your grip in small steps; tendons adapt more slowly than muscle, so hands and elbows lag behind what motivation wants.3 Push volume up too fast and you can turn a habit into a wrist or forearm strain. Should you dead hang to failure to improve?
Usually not. Failing every session builds fatigue faster than capacity. Most people progress faster with sub-maximal holds (~70–80% of max), stopping with a little left, done more often. Test a true max only every week or two.
How often should you train dead hangs?
Three to four short sessions a week, with enough rest between them for your hands and forearms to recover. Frequent easy exposure beats rare maximal efforts for endurance.
How fast can you increase your dead hang time?
Beginners often add real time within a few weeks, partly from technique and grip confidence. Aim for roughly 3–5 seconds added to your total each week, tapering as you get stronger.
What if I can't hang for even ten seconds?
Offload weight — a band under your feet or toes on a bench — so you can hold longer with good form, then remove support gradually.
