Dead hangs put steady, repetitive isometric tension through the tendons and fascia of the forearm. Done too much too soon, that load can overload those tissues — the kind of thing that, left alone, can drift from a mild ache into tendonitis or a repetitive-strain injury.12 Caught early and rested, most people settle it down. Here's the general picture, and the signs it's not one to self-manage.
If it hurts now — first steps
General self-care for a mild, non-alarming strain looks like this — closer to the modern "relative rest and gradual loading" guidance than total immobilisation.5 It is not a substitute for an assessment if the pain is anything more than mild.
- Rest. Pause dedicated grip training, pull-ups and heavy lifting that triggers the pain — commonly for about 7–10 days for a mild strain, longer if it's slow to settle.
- Ice. A cold pack wrapped in a cloth on the sore area, around 15 minutes, a few times a day, can ease local inflammation. Never put ice straight on skin.
- Modify, don't stop moving. Switch to pushing work (push-ups, overhead press) or legs — training that doesn't demand a tight grip — so you keep momentum without loading the sore tissue.

- Pain that's severe, or that isn't clearly improving after a week or two of rest
- Numbness, tingling, or pins-and-needles into the hand or fingers
- Weakness, or a grip that suddenly gives out
- Visible swelling, deformity, or pain that followed a specific pop or wrench
Why hanging strains the forearm
A few mechanisms come up again and again for wrist and forearm pain from hanging:
- Extensor overload. The muscles on top of the forearm work to stabilise the wrist during gripping, and can get strained near the joint — the same extensor mechanism behind tennis elbow.34
- A twisted or sagging grip. Hanging with the wrists cranked at an angle, or letting them go completely limp, can pinch nerves or hyper-extend the small ligaments of the wrist.
- Not enough recovery. Jumping into high-volume hanging before the tendons and fascia have adapted lets micro-tears accumulate faster than they heal.
Returning to the bar safely
Once the pain has fully resolved — not before — these are common ways people reduce the odds of it coming back. Ease in; don't pick up where the injury started.
- Neutral alignment. The same principle hand therapists use at a desk applies on the bar: keep the wrist roughly in line with the forearm rather than cranked at a sharp angle.8
- Try gym rings. If a fixed straight bar keeps aggravating it, rings rotate freely, so the wrist can settle into a more natural angle — mechanically that should ease the torque a fixed bar locks in. That's reasoning from how rings work, not a head-to-head study, so treat it as something to try, not a guarantee.
- Warm up first. Gentle wrist circles and forearm stretches raise blood flow before you load the tissue. Warming up isn't a proven injury-preventer, but the balance of evidence leans toward a lower risk.7
- Rebuild volume slowly. Start well below where you left off and add load in small steps — see how to progress without overdoing it.
Why do my wrists hurt after dead hangs?
Often a mix of the forearm extensors overworking to stabilise the wrist, hanging with twisted or sagging wrists, and too much volume before the tissue has adapted. Persistent or severe pain deserves a professional's eyes, not a guess.
Should I keep hanging through the pain?
No. Training through wrist or forearm pain risks turning a mild strain into a lasting one. Pause grip-intensive work until it resolves, and get it checked if it's severe, persistent, or comes with numbness or weakness.
How long should I rest it?
A mild strain is often rested around 7–10 days, but this varies a lot and connective tissue can be slow. If it's not clearly improving, have it assessed rather than waiting it out.
Do gym rings help?
They can — rings let the wrist rotate into a natural position instead of the fixed angle of a bar. Treat it as a modification to try once you're pain-free, not a fix for an active injury.
